When we think about our own problems, we feel that there is no justice in the world, but when we look at the challenges others face, we can see “cause and effect in action.” The formula for spiritual growth is the exact opposite. When we are considering our own challenges, we should know that they are a result of something we have done and that the world is perfect and just. But when our friend is experiencing pain, we should feel the world is unjust and be moved to fight against the injustice. When I say fight against the injustices, I don’t mean to take someone down, but rather to build something up. (As an aside, my father the Rav taught me that it takes two seconds to destroy something that took years to build.) Let’s use our outrage at all the negativity in the world for the sake of creative something positive in place of it.
